Argyroxiphium sandwicense is endemic to the islands of Maui and Hawaii. Subspecies macrocephalum occurs on Maui, and subspecies sandwicense on the island of Hawaii. There are a total of eight subpopulations, many of which are limited to very few remaining naturally occurring plants.
