Plant Botanical Name:
Abutilon menziesii
Plant Threat Level:
Endangered

Abutilon menziesii is an endangered Hawaiian endemic shrub that grows in dry forests on the islands of Lana'i, Maui, O'ahu, and Hawai'i. Currently, fewer than 500 plants remain in ten naturally occurring populations. The rarity of this plant can be attributed to the alteration of habitat for agricultural and urban development, overgrazing, and competition from invasive weeds and invasive animals. A conservation plan has been implemented by federal and state agencies to protect remaining habitat, establish new populations, and conserve genetic material in seed banks and botanical gardens.
