Cabbage on a stick

Cabbage on a stick (Brighamia insignis)
Plant Botanical Name:
Brighamia insignis
Plant Threat Level:
Endangered

Cabbage on a stick, in the campanula family, is listed as "Critically Endangered" and is found on a few sea cliffs on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Overgrazing, human development, and competition from invasive plants have reduced this species to less than twenty naturally occurring individuals. The extinction of its pollinator, the sphingid moth, has made it all but impossible for Brighamia insignis to reproduce on its own. Conservationists go to great lengths to exchange pollen among these plants and to collect seeds that are grown in botanical gardens or stored in seed banks.
