Orchid Express
Co-Sponsored by the Smithsonian’s Horticulture Services Division, National Museum of Natural History’s Department of Systemic Biology, Botany Section and the U.S. Botanic Garden

Exhibit is located at the National Museum of Natural History through May 1, 2005

Exotic Orchids have always been among the most popular and keenly sought after members of the plant kingdom, despite the fact that until recent years orchids had the reputation of being finicky, difficult to grow and prohibitively expensive. But today, with the advent of new technologies in the ornamental plant industry, orchid plants can be seen everywhere-- hotel lobbies, restaurants, windowsills and greenhouses around the world. This orchid exhibition explores the transformation, tracking the progress from discovery, collection in the wild, transportation, cultivation, hybridization, propagation and finally mass-marketing to the delighted audience of plant lovers. In short, The Orchid Express will transport you from "mountain top to table top."
