General Horticulture Volunteer

Division Assignment: Horticulture
Reports to:
- Jim Kaufmann, Horticulture Supervisor
- Maura Nelson, Volunteer Coordinator
Purpose:
To support the USBG mission of demonstrating the aesthetic, cultural, economic, ecological and therapeutic importance of plants to the well-being of humankind by assisting the horticulture staff with the care and maintenance of the living collection at the downtown Conservatory location as well as the greenhouse Production Facility.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist gardeners with routine horticultural tasks such as weeding, pruning and general cleaning of the Conservatory, greenhouses and outdoor gardens
Qualifications:
- Master Gardener certificate, a degree in horticulture or be currently employed in the field of horticulture
- Interest in care and maintenance of living collections
- Cooperative nature, including the ability to accept instruction and correction
- Ability to be courteous, respectful and patient with visitors
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances
- Professional manner and appearance
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment
Training Provided:
- Minimal training will be provided. Candidate must have basic knowledge of gardening techniques
Time Commitment:
- 100 hours a year
- Flexible scheduling
