Hibiscus clayi Hibiscus clayi is an endangered tree that is endemic to dry forests in the Kaua’i-Nounou Mountains on the island of Kaua’i. Only one naturally-occurring population of four individual plants remains intact. However, habitat protection efforts and propagation of plants in botanical gardens are slowly increasing the numbers of plants found in forest reserves and gardens throughout Hawaii. Also, private landowners and public land managers are working to carefully manage recreational use of threatened habitats, livestock grazing, and invasive weeds, all of which pose threats to the continued survival of Hibiscus clayi and other endangered Hawaiian plants. |
