Our Backyard Wonder--Rare Plant Communities of the Potomac River Gorge
Mary Travaglini, Potomac Gorge Habitat Restoration Manger, The Nature Conservancy of Maryland/DC

Venture beyond the National Mall just a few miles upstream along the Potomac and you will step into another national treasure--the Potomac Gorge. A place of stunning beauty, the Potomac Gorge is also a nationally significant natural area, boasting seven globally rare plant communities in just a 15-mile stretch of river valley. Influenced by natural flooding and scouring and a variety of rocks, soils, and micro-climates, a diversity of plant communities are sustained, including at least one believed to be found nowhere else in the world. Join us for a photographic and narrative journey through the Potomac Gorge and discover more about this treasure and how many partners are working together to protect this unique area.
